SYLLABUS AND PUBLICATION NEWS 2009 - MUSIC

In 2009 candidates should present for examination in accordance with the syllabus, requirements and regulations prescribed in the 2009 Manual of Syllabuses – Music Syllabuses, published by Australian Music Examinations Board Ltd, available from AMEB State Offices and music retailers.

Extra Lists

Amended Requirement: The Extra List requirements for some syllabuses were amended from 2008.  Candidates are now required to prepare no more than two Extra List pieces for any instrumental or singing syllabus, from Second Grade to Seventh Grade, inclusive. (Extra List works are not required for Preliminary Grade, First Grade, Eighth Grade, Certificate of Performance or Level 3 examinations; Extra List works are not required for any For Leisure syllabus.) Please refer to the 2009 Manual of Syllabuses – Music Syllabuses: page xiii.

Additional Requirements

The AMEB Additional Requirements for Practical Examinations were amended in 2007, to include Music Craft: Regulation 19(b). From 2009, the acceptable Theory qualifications from alternative examining authorities have been amended: Regulation 19(c). Please refer to the 2009 Manual of Syllabuses – Music Syllabuses Syllabuses: page xx, TABLE A.

A candidate who successfully completed a Grade 6, 7 or 8 practical examination in a prior year and who can demonstrate that he/she has fulfilled the current additional requirement may apply for the certificate to be released.

Additional Requirements for Associate and Licentiate Practical Examinations: Regulation 19(b) was amended in 2008, with the effect that there is now no time limit within which candidates for Associate and Licentiate practical examinations must fulfil the respective Additional Requirement. Note that the award of an Associate Diploma or Licentiate Diploma will not be made until the Additional Requirement is satisfied. It is the candidate’s responsibility to notify the AMEB Victorian Office as to the date of passing the Additional Requirement.

Bassoon

Syllabus Review: A review of the Bassoon syllabus will be undertaken in 2009. Contributions by teachers and students will be welcomed. Please check the AMEB Federal Office website (www.ameb.edu.au) for the latest news on this review.

Clarinet

New Syllabus: A new Clarinet syllabus is available for examination from 2009. It includes examinations for Preliminary Grade and Certificate of Performance. In 2009, candidates may present for examination using either the “new” Clarinet syllabus (2009) or the “old” syllabus from the 2008 Manual. The syllabus chosen for examination must be presented in its entirety. During the first years of use, the new Clarinet syllabus will be under evaluation, prior to withdrawal of the old syllabus. At the completion of evaluation, any necessary adjustments will be made to the new syllabus and one year’s notice will be given advising of the withdrawal of the old syllabus.

New Publications: New publications are available for use with the new Clarinet syllabus: Clarinet Grade Books – Series 3, from Preliminary to Fourth Grade; Clarinet Handbooks and Recordings – Series 3, from Preliminary to Fourth Grade; Clarinet and Bass Clarinet Orchestral and Chamber Music Excerpts; and a new Clarinet Technical Work Book.

Music Craft

New Syllabus: AMEB’s new approach to teaching and learning music theory, Music Craft, was released in 2007 and Level 1 (Preliminary to Grade 4) examinations have been available. Music Craft integrates aural training and theoretical studies from the beginning. Examinations in the aural and written components for a particular grade will be held consecutively on the same day .

Syllabus Changes: The 2009 Music Craft syllabus includes several amendments, which affect the number of tests that can be expected in the aural section of the examinations and some of the examinable content of Grade 4. Please consult the 2009 Manual of Syllabuses – Music Syllabuses for details.

Publications: Student Workbooks (Preliminary to Grade 4) are available for use with the Music Craft syllabus. Each Workbook is accompanied by two aural training CDs. The corresponding Teacher’s Guides explain the concepts encountered in the Student Workbook. Each Teacher’s Guide contains a Thematic Outline and Concept Map for easy referencing of theoretical concepts, as well as all the answers to the questions in the respective Student Workbook.

Syllabus Development: Music Craft Grades 5 and 6 are now under development.

Musicianship

Syllabus Changes: In 2008, one year’s notice was given of changes to the Musicianship syllabus. From 2009, only the new syllabus structure (including new Folk Tunes and Set Works) will be examined. Details of the changes are provided in the 2009 Manual of Syllabuses – Music Syllabuses and a downloadable fact sheet.

Piano

New Syllabus: A new Piano syllabus is available for examination from 2009. It includes a Certificate of Performance examination. In 2009, candidates may present for examination using either the “new” Piano syllabus (2009) or the “old” syllabus from the 2008 Manual. The syllabus chosen for examination must be presented in its entirety. During the first years of use, the new Piano syllabus will be under evaluation, prior to withdrawal of the old syllabus. At the completion of evaluation, any necessary adjustments will be made to the new syllabus and one year’s notice will be given advising of the withdrawal of the old syllabus.

New Publications: New publications are available for use with the new Piano syllabus: Piano Grade Books – Series 16, from Preliminary to Eighth Grade; Piano Handbooks and Recordings – Series 16, from Preliminary to Eighth Grade; and a new Piano Technical Work Book.

The Well-tempered Clavier - BWV Numbers: A guide which may assist with identification of the Bach Preludes and Fugues listed in the new (2009) Piano Syllabus is available from this website.

Withdrawal from Examination of Piano Series 13: Works from the Piano Series 13 Grade Books were withdrawn from examination in 2006. However, they may still be presented as Extra List works.

Saxophone

New Publications: New publications are available for use with the new Saxophone syllabus: Saxophone Grade Books – Series 2, from First Grade to Fourth Grade (Alto); Saxophone Grade Books – Series 2, from First Grade to Fourth Grade (Tenor); and a new Saxophone Technical Work Book.

Orchestral Excerpts: The “old” (2008) Saxophone syllabus prescribes the playing of orchestral excerpts for List D in Sixth Grade, Seventh Grade and Eighth Grade from The orchestral saxophonist (ed. Ronkin and Frascotti). Candidates who are unable to obtain access to this publication, or who do not wish to perform orchestral excerpts, may select a further work from any of Lists A, B or C to present at examination in place of List D.

Saxophone for Leisure

New Syllabus: A national Saxophone for Leisure syllabus was released in 2008 – as published in the 2008 and 2009 Manual of Syllabuses – Music Syllabuses. The syllabus caters for the exploration of popular repertoire – including well-loved standards from the classics, jazz standards, arrangements of movie themes, popular songs and concert arrangements. Only the national (2008) Saxophone for Leisure syllabus is now accepted for examination (not the pilot syllabus).

New Publications: The Saxophone for Leisure syllabus is supported by a series of publications: the Saxophone for Leisure Grade Books – Series 1, from Preliminary to Fourth Grade. A CD of backing tracks is included with each Grade Book and may be used during part of an examination

Singing

Singing for Leisure

New Syllabus: A national Singing for Leisure syllabus was released in 2008 – as published in the 2008 and 2009 Manual of Syllabuses – Music Syllabuses. Its unique combination of styles complements the traditional Singing syllabus and the Contemporary Popular Music (CPM) Vocal syllabus. The Singing for Leisure syllabus allows singers to explore popular repertoire – including well-loved classics, folk songs, jazz styles, songs from musical theatre and film, and contemporary popular songs. Only the national (2008) Singing for Leisure syllabus is now accepted for examination (not the pilot syllabus).

New Publications: The Singing for Leisure syllabus is supported by a series of publications: the Singing for Leisure Grade Books – Series 1 include Preliminary to Fourth Grade in High and Low voice ranges. A CD of backing tracks is included with each Grade Book and may be used during an examination.
